چکیده

A black hole may carry axionic charge in a theory which has gravity coupled to a massless two-form Kalb-Ramond field. We show that this effect persists if the axion has a topological mass term coupling the Kalb-Ramond potential to a U(1) gauge field. Such mass terms arise in the low-energy effective theory of the string. Bitnet addresses: tjallen@suhep, bowick@suhep, lahiri@suhep.

String Axiverse

String theory suggests the simultaneous presence of many ultralight axions, possibly populating each decade of mass down to the Hubble scale 10−33eV. Conversely the presence of such a plenitude of axions (an “axiverse”) would be evidence for string theory, since it arises due to the topological complexity of the extra-dimensional manifold and is ad hoc in a theory with just the four familiar di...

Exact solutions of four-dimensional black holes in string theory.

We construct an exact conformal field theory as an SL(2, R) × SU(2)/U(1)2 gauged WZW model, which describes a black hole in four dimensions. Another exact solution, describing a black membrane in four dimensions (in the sense that the event horizon is an infinite plane) is found as an SL(2, R)×U(1)2/U(1) gauged WZW model. Both the black hole and the black membrane carry axionic charge. Finally,...

Special Geometry of Euclidean Supersymmetry III: the local r-map, instantons and black holes

We define and study projective special para-Kähler manifolds and show that they appear as target manifolds when reducing five-dimensional vector multiplets coupled to supergravity with respect to time. The dimensional reductions with respect to time and space are carried out in a uniform way using an ǫ-complex notation. We explain the relation of our formalism to other formalisms of special geo...

Self-gravitating fundamental strings and black holes

The configuration of typical highly excited (M ≫ Ms ∼ (α′)−1/2) string states is considered as the string coupling g is adiabatically increased. The size distribution of very massive single string states is studied and the mass shift, due to long-range gravitational, dilatonic and axionic attraction, is estimated. By combining the two effects, in any number of spatial dimensions d, the most pro...

Rapidly spinning massive black holes in active galactic nuclei: evidence from the black hole mass function

The comparison of the black hole mass function (BHMF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) relics with the measured mass function of the massive black holes in galaxies provides strong evidence for the growth of massive black holes being dominated by mass accretion. We derive the Eddington ratio distributions as functions of black hole mass and redshift from a large AGN sample with measured Eddingto...
